Today,North Carolina boasts one of the largest ferry systems in the United States with seven routes in the system. All types of motor vehicles are welcome on the ferry routes.

The vessels, which operate at an average speed of 10 knots, operate in five different bodies of water: Pamlico Sound, Currituck Sound, Neuse River, Pamlico River, and Cape Fear River. The terminals can be found at Cedar Island, Ocracoke, Hatteras, Swan Quarter, Southport, Pamlico River, and Cherry Point Branch. The shortest crossing is Cherry Branch to Minnesott Beach (2.3 miles and 20 minutes away - no reservations needed). The longest crossing is Swan Quarter to Ocracoke Island (27 miles or 2˝ hours for crossing - reservations needed).
